The King’s Highway (Days of Dread Trilogy) Genre – Christian Dystopian

Product Details

With airplanes falling out of the sky and all things electric rendered useless after a mysterious flash, skills instilled by Jackson’s Marine father move front and center. With a fierce determination to keep his thirteen-year-old sister McKenzie and nine-year-old brother Cooper safe, the high school freshman is compelled to leave their Irving home in the shadow of the DFW Airport. Thrust into a lawless, chaotic world, he’s guided by an ever-changing cryptic note that leads his growing troupe along the King’s Highway in search of their grandparents. Bullies, Russians, wild animals, gang-bangers, and kidnappers thwart their progress while a lack of drinkable water and food is a constant concern. Will he ever find a safe place?

My Opinion

The day starts out as a regular one.  Three kids are getting ready for school after their mother has left for work.  Their dad is on deployment, so the oldest child, Jackson, is left in charge to aid his mother.  There is suddenly a flash.  All electronics have ceased to work.  The kids can hear gun shots going off in their neighborhood.  They wait out the first day hoping that their mother will return after work.

Four days later, Jackson decides that he needs to get his siblings to their grandparents house so they can all be safe.  Their adventure finds them being guided by a dead man and his dog Boggs.  They soon find other children who are in need of help.  The family of three add on these new children and together they continue toward their grandparents home.

They encounter many trials that no child should have to endure.  They work together to keep one another proetcted.  Their new dog Boggs, cares for them by killing animals for them to eat.  He also helps keep them protected and for that, the children are thankful.

This exciting story kept me wanting more!  I found myself worried for the group of children and as a mom, couldn’t imagine my own children having to fend for themselves in such a way.  I am excited to know that this was book one in the series and that I will soon get to read the next book.

I was not monetarily compensated for my opinion, but was alloted a free copy of the book for my honest opinion.  I give the story 5/5 stars.
